Commission to review Nova Scotia electoral boundaries

A commission has been created to review and make recommendations on electoral boundaries in Nova Scotia.

The provincial government says the eight-member commission is required to submit its final report to the attorney general by August 31st.

The commission was formed after a series of consultations around the province.

The announcement of its creation comes days after the opposition Conservatives accused the government of squelching minority rights by altering electoral boundary rules.

The Tories said an NDP-dominated committee approved changes Friday that will lead to the elimination of four seats representing small populations of Acadians and African Nova Scotians.

But the New Democrats denied the ridings would disappear, saying their boundaries will merely be changed to ensure voters receive equal representation.
