Herald employees ratify contract

Employees at the Chronicle Herald newspaper have approved a new contract with their employer.

Members of the Halifax Typographical Union voted 94.6 per cent in favor of accepting the four-year deal on Monday, which includes a two per cent increase in salary in each year of the contract.

The contract also introduces a six-step wage grid with a slightly lower starting wage for new hires.

It was the employer’s proposal to cut the starting salary for reporters and photographers by $12,000 a year which almost sent newspaper employees to the picket lines earlier in the month.

Union members had voted 96 per cent in favour strike action on Feb. 4.

In a release, union president Stephen Forest called the agreement “fair and reasonable.”

Members had been without a contract since November 21, 2011.
