Halifax packaging company says management will keep facility going during strike

More than 100 unionized workers at a Halifax packaging company walked off the job Friday.
But Maritime Paper Products Ltd., says it intends to keep its operation running during the strike.
The workers are members of Local 1530 of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, and have been without a contract since last May.
The union says the company is seeking concessions on pensions, benefits and flexibility around weekend scheduling of senior employees.
Kim Power, the union’s national representative, says at the centre of the dispute is the company’s request to place new
employees in a defined contribution pension plan instead of a defined benefit plan.
In a statement, the company says it intends to keep the Halifax plant running with management, as well as ramp up production at its other facilities in St. John’s, N.L., Saint John, N.B., and Summerside, P.E.I.
