Rental scam hits Halifax

The rental market in Halifax is busy at this time of year. Students from all around are descending on the city looking for a place to live as area university’s roar to life.
Students using online classified ad boards looking for and inside track on what’s available are falling victim to a new scam
Detective Constable Dana Drover of the Halifax Regional Police RCMP Integrated Financial Task Force says it’s a very easy scam to fall victim too.
Drover says “An unscrupulous landlord who took money and re-rented the same place over and over to different people, and unfortunately lost their money and the residence as well.”
Drover says tenants have to be particularly vigilant in ensuring that the person renting them a space is legitimate.
Drover suggests contacting the Better Business Bureau as part of doing one’s homework on rentals.
