Liberal Party heavyweights are in Halifax for the political party’s annual leaders dinner tonight at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel.
Senator Romeo Dallaire will be speaking at the event, however all eyes are expected to be on Justin Trudeau who recently announced his bid to become the next leader of the federal Liberal Party.
“I am excited about the fact that Justin is in. I’m excited about the enthusiasm I’m hearing as I travel the province,” provincial leader Stephen McNeil told Maritime Morning Sunday. “He certainly generates a lot of enthusiasm in communities when he goes there.”
The federal Liberal Party is in the process of rebuilding after a crushing defeat during the 2011 federal election when they slipped to third-party status.
There was some anticipation that foreign affairs critic Dominic Leblanc would run as the next leader of the federal Liberals, but the childhood friend of Justin Trudeau’s bowed out shortly after Trudeau entered the race.
“I have a great deal of respect for Dominic,” said McNeil. “I was hoping he was going to throw his name in the hat because I believe both him and Justin represent the future of our party.”
While Trudeau has been making headlines as of late, retired Canadian Army Lieutenant-General Dallaire will make the keynote speech.
“We are very much looking forward to him coming in and sharing, obviously his thoughts, not only about the country, but about Canada’s role internationally. He’s obviously been a decorated Canadian,” said McNeil.
