On the eve of a gas price increase, there are warnings Canadians should brace for higher energy bills this winter.
News 95.7 is predicting about a two cent a litre increase in the price of gasoline when the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board adjusts the price at midnight.
Motorist in Metro Halifax are currently paying $1.263 and could be paying about $1.28 by Friday morning.
Consumers for Fair Gas Prices said the price of wholesale gasoline has been volatile following Hurricane Sandy.
“We’re still seeing some residual effects from that with some refineries that are still out in the U.S. Northeast, and they’re still getting a hard read on inventories,” George Murphy told the Rick Howe Show Wednesday.
Murphy predicts gasoline prices will stay low over the next few weeks.
“No real reason to see any sharp, sharp increases in gasoline prices,” he said. “After that I think we’re going to be on a downward slide for a little bit, at least until December.”
This comes as the National Energy Board warns Canadians that demand for gasoline, natural gas and home-heating fuel will outstrip the supply this winter and prices will be high.
The board predicts the average price of regular gasoline this winter will be between $1.20 and $1.40 per litre. That’s consistent with the prices Nova Scotians have been paying over the last few months. The average price across the country today is about $1.21.
