Fewer Nova Scotians turned off power for Earth Hour

It was lights out for many people across the province from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. last night for Earth Hour.

“There was a five-megawatt reduction in power consumption,” said Neera Ritcey, spokesperson for Nova Scotia Power. “That’s the equivalent of turning off almost 400,000 13-watt compact flurescent light bulbs.”

But that number is less impressive than years before.

“Last year we saw an 11-megawatt drop, before that it was 18-megawatts.” adds Ritcey.

Earth Hour is a symbolic event to raise awareness of climate change. It’s observed by more than seven thousand cities and towns in more than 150 countries and territories.
