Suspicious package clears several buildings on Halifax military base

A suspicious package left at a Halifax military base Wednesday forced the evacuation of three buildings at CFB Halifax and the closure of a major street adjacent to it.

But after a few hours and an investigation by a remotely-controlled robot, the all-clear signal was sounded.

A section of Gottingen Street, between North and Almon streets, was shut down to traffic not long after the package was found around 10 a.m. near Juno Tower on the Stadacona part of the base.

Three buildings on the Stadacona side were also evacuated, and the occupants of buildings nearby were ordered to stay inside while the military, including its bomb squad, investigated.

The package turned out to be a bag, which didn’t include anything harmful to those on the military property, said Capt. Peter Ryan, a spokesman for Maritime Forces Atlantic.

The robot used a water cannon to blast the package and members of the military’s explosive ordinance team checked out the bag once it was deemed safe.
