Tall ship “Eagle” docks in Halifax for the weekend

The Eagle has landed.
The U-S Coast Guard cutter “Eagle” arrived at Cable Wharf at 10a.m. this morning.
Consul General at the U-S Consulate in Halifax Richard Riley said the tall ship’s visit is another shining example of the co-operation between Canada and the United States.
“It just shows the strength of the security relationship that we have between our two countries,” he said. “We just had Vice Admiral Rob Parker from the United States Coast Guard up here last week for the change of command for the Joint Task Force Atlantic.”
Riley told News 95.7 he considers the tall ship to be an ambassador from his country.
He said the ship itself comes with an interesting history dating back to World War II.
“It’s an older vessel which was constructed in Hamburg, Germany and it was commissioned originally by the German navy,” he explained. “It was taken by the United States as a war reparation following World War II and we’ve used it as a training vessel for cadets at the U-S Coast Guard, I believe, since 1946.”
Riley added he hopes the iconic ship will make Halifax a destination every year for many years to come.
The 295 foot ship will be available for tours from 2p.m. until 7p.m. Friday and again from 10a.m. to 7a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
