The rare times Haligonians get on to Georges Island soil is during special events such as concerts, but this weekend, there’s a new event for families.
Called “Picnic in the Past,” visitors with tickets meet at Bishop’s Landing, sail over on the Harbour Queen to the secluded island, enjoy a picnic basket full of local food, and get to check out the island’s history.
“Parks Canada will transform Fort Charlotte as if it were the 1800’s,” said event organizer Derek Martin. “With an encampment, musket firing demonstrations and tours of the tunnels.”
The event is organized by Sports and Entertainment Atlantic, the same events company responsible for past concerts on the island and Tall Ships.
“Our previous concert was so successful, we wanted to do something again,” adds Martin. “So this weekend is the picnic, and next is the Smirnoff Red Door Island Party featuring Maritimers like Classified and The Trews.”
Martin expects 5,000 visitors this weekend and next. More than 500 tickets have been sold for Picnic in the Past with spots full until noon, but there’s still spots available after 1 o’clock.
The island will be open from 10 until 5 Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth and seniors. Click here for more details or to buy tickets.
Georges Island is a National Historic Site located in Halifax Harbour and is not open for general visitation.
