Cape Breton group buys Seaside Communications

SYDNEY, N.S. – A Cape Breton-based holding company has purchased Seaside Communications Inc. and Seaside Wireless Communications Inc., both based in Sydney.

Oceanside Communication Holdings Inc. is purchasing the two companies from the family of the late Cape Breton businessman Irving Schwartz, who died in 2010.

The sale price was not disclosed in a statement issued Thursday.

Established in 1975, Seaside Communications provides cable TV, telephone and high-speed Internet service to more than 11,000 customers in Cape Breton and eastern Nova Scotia.

Seaside Wireless Communications provides wireless high-speed Internet service to parts of rural Nova Scotia, serving nearly 10,000 customers.

Martin Chernin, leader of the buying group, says the purchases mean about 100 jobs will be staying in N.S.

Chernin says the new owners plan to improve network capacity and product offerings in both the cable and wireless divisions.
