HRM councillors get 2.25 per cent pay raise

HRM councillors have received a pay raise – their second since they were sworn in a year ago.
Regional councillors have received a 2.25 per cent raise to their salary, which works out to about $1,000.
Councillors will now earn $78,000 per year.
Nine years ago, a formula was established by an arm’s length group that compares and matches the salaries paid to councillors in other municipalities.
Lower Sackville Coun. Steve Craig tried to have the process reviewed, but that was turned down this summer.
“It’s a very important topic. I put a lot of effort into explaining my position around the process and I had some proposals out there,” he said. “It was defeated by council and council as a whole makes the decisions.”
Dartmouth South Coun. Bill Karsten said there was already a recent review of the salary formula.
“It was reviewed two years ago, independently, arm’s length, from an outside citizens committee,” he explained.
Karsten added when he decided to run for council, it wasn’t for the money but for the job.
