Great need for blood donations during holidays

Canadian Blood Services is hosting special New Year’s eve clinics Tuesday in hopes of drumming up donations.
Spokesperson Renée Horton said along with the holidays unfonrtunately comes an increase in accidents and a need for blood and a decrease in donations.
“People aren’t thinking about donating blood,” said Horton, “They are planning their festivities, they are ringing in the new year, they’re with family and friends.”
She added people who meet the criteria to donate blood are being encouraged to do so Tuesday.
“You need to be at least 17 years of age, at least 110 lbs, and in good health,” said Horton.
Walk-ins are welcome to come donate at the Halifax Blood Donor Clinic on Bayers Road and Churchill Academy on Crichton Avenue in Dartmouth.
She added the goal for the week is to reach 200 units of blood in HRM.
