Dog found ‘frozen solid’ at North Preston home

A call about a dog frozen to death in North Preston has the SPCA reminding pet owners of their responsibility to provide shelter to all pets from dangerous cold.
Investigators were called out on December 23 and found a dead dog in a doghouse.
“It was in there but the dog was frozen,” said SPCA Chief Provincial Inspector David Ross. “It was frozen solid. In fact it was so frozen that it was stuck to the ground and had to be removed from the ground.”
The dog’s body has been seized for further investigation. The cause of death has not been determined.
“We’re not sure — we don’t want to say the dog died of being out in the extreme cold,” said Ross. “The dog will be sent to a necropsy, and at that point we’ll be able to determine the cause of death and once we determine that, we’ll be able to continue with our investigation.”
The Nova Scotia SPCA is empowered under the Provincial Animal Protection Act to investigate complaints of animal cruelty and, when necessary, seize animals from situations of cruelty or neglect.
