Blizzard hits Halifax: Closures and cancellations

Halifax spent Friday afternoon being beaten by a nasty blizzard. We had whiteout conditions and dangerously cold temperatures for most of the day.
At midday, Meteorologist Richard Zurawski said we’d seen about 20 cm of snow so far, with another 10 cm to fall before the snow tapered off. The winds, though, will continue into the night.

Police are urging motorists to stay off the roads if possible. Shortly after noon, an officer reported upwards of 20 cars stranded at the Halifax side of the Macdonald Bridge, unable to get up North Street.
Metro Transit stopped service over the noon hour. ‘With conditions expected to deteriorate, bus service is suspended until further notice. Buses without passengers will return to the garage,” said a representative via Twitter. “Buses with passengers will continue on their routes until all passengers have reached their destinations.”
Just before 5:30 p.m., Metro Transit sent word that service would not return Friday night.
HRM’s overnight winter parking ban will be enforced tonight.
Halifax Water has confirmed that many customers in the region are experiencing frozen pipes this morning. They are asking anyone with frozen pipes to call 490 6940 to report a suspected frozen water line. Halifax Water is also reminding folks not to use a flame source to thaw out a pipe.
