Near double-digit temperatures accompanied by rainfall warning

It’s shaping up to be another crazy weather day in HRM.

After temperatures feeling like minus 30 just a couple of days ago, near double-digit temperatures and lots of rain are set to slide into the region today.

Meteorologist Richard Zurawski says we can expect 25 millimetres of rain and a lot of that will freeze on contact because the ground is so cold.

He adds we also need to mindful of localized flooding.

“We’ve also got a melt going on in addition to the rainfall and the storm sewers are going to be overburdened,” he explains. “We’re going to get some heavy rain throughout the day and that means we’re going to get localized flooding, we’re going to get hydroplaning and reduced visibility as well.”

He explains we were in a large artic air mass, which is why it was so cold, and this low pressure system is coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, which is why it’s going to be so warm.

“It’s sliding up to the north, meeting up with an Icelandic low which is well offshore and we’re getting dragged into some very moist air,” he says.

If you think we have it bad, Zurawski explains what the rest of the continent is going through and it’s not pretty either.

“The centre regions of North America, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the central and mid-west of the United States are going to be dipping into some extremely brutally cold Artic air; probably the coldest that we’ve had this year,” he says.

Zurawski adds the warm weather here won’t last and we’ll be back to the minus 15 degree range by midweek.
