A buoy at the mouth of the Halifax Harbour has gone online, providing updated weather information for the Port of Halifax and other mariners.
The tool is designed to help enhance safety and overall operations for sea-faring vessels.
All the information can be found at smartatlantic.ca.
Justice Minister Peter MacKay says it’s all information operators, shipers and marine pilots need.
“To reduce delayed or cancelled dockings at the Halifax port due to weather and wave conditions,” said MacKay. “It’ll provide accurate weather information.”
Bill Carter, with the Marine Institute in Newfoundland explains the information can be used to make operational decisons at the port as well.
“They can slow that vessel down, not bring it in so close,” said Carter. “Then, of course, the vessel is not burning as much fuel because it’s travelling slower.”
The project cost $366,000 to get in the water, will cost $120,000 a year to operate and will be funded for the next ten years.
