Premier says protocol officer appointment not against the rules

HALIFAX, N.S. – Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil says no rules were broken when his cabinet appointed a failed Liberal candidate as the province’s protocol officer.
McNeil issued a statement Friday saying Glennie Langille’s 30-year career as a journalist made her qualified for the post, but he confirms that no competition was held.
Maureen MacDonald, the NDP’s interim leader, is pointing to a series of internal emails that she says prove Langille wasn’t qualified for the job.
“This is a patronage appointment, plain and simple, and these documents confirm that.”
Soon after the appointment of Langille in December, McNeil said the cabinet asked Langille, McNeil’s former communications director, to take the job ahead of other applicants because she was qualified for the position.
