Trash talk comes to council today

Regional councillors will be talking trash at city hall today.

City staff have recommended a number of changes in the way we deal with waste in the region, including requiring the use of clear plastic bags with one small opaque bag, and reducing the bag limit from 6 to 4.

Another recommendation in the solid-waste report is to extend the life of the Otter Lake landfill beyond 2024 by increasing its height 15 metres.

According to Ken Donnelly of the Otter Lake Community Monitoring Committee, that’s not even the most contentious issue.

“It is the intention of staff to close the front-end processing facility and waste stabilization facility. And their purpose is to provide community and environmental protection,” Donnelly told News 95.7.

Donnelly said staff didn’t consult with people who live near the landfill before making those recommendations, and a contractual agreement between the city and the community guarantees those facilities will be there.

“To unilaterally close them down now, would be reneging on that contract,” said Donnelly.

Council’s committee of the whole will discuss the Otter Lake report later today.
