Municipality asks public’s help with post-Arthur clean-up

Halifax experienced a lot of tree damage as Arthur blew through the Maritimes.

Municipal crews and private contractors have been going non-stop since Saturday dealing with dangerous trees and blocked roads and sidewalks.

Over 210 calls have been received reporting tree damage, and the Halifax Regional Municipality is asking citizens to call 311 to report downed trees or limbs.

They say residents can place bundled tree debris alongside their green bin and it will be picked up during regularly scheduled collection. Solid Waste services will accept up to 10 bundles per household each week until all the debris is cleared.

A release from HRM says each bundle of debris, secured with twine, should be no larger than what is typically accepted:
· about what you can hold in an arm load
· not heavier than 75 lbs (35 kg)
· not longer than four feet
· branch sizes need to be less than 8 inches in diameter

More than 50,000 Nova Scotia Power customers are still without power as of Monday morning, according to the utility’s website.
