Burnside lockdown to end this week, province says

The province says a lockdown at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility should wind down this week.

Four guards were assaulted by inmates Saturday morning, as prisoners were being let out of their cells at what was supposed to be the end of a lockdown that began Monday evening.

Department of Justice spokesman Andrew Preeper says he’s not sure exactly what caused this latest incident.

“We did expect that, with the longer lockdown last week, that there might be some tension rising from that … Other than that, I couldn’t say specifically what may have been the motive,” said Preeper.

Preeper says the current lockdown will wind down this week, but he can’t specify exactly when.

“The facility has started to slowly bring the lockdown down, and we’ll be resuming normal operations through this week,” he said.
