New North Park St. roundabout open for traffic, cyclists, pedestrians

It’s been under construction since July, and now, the North Park St. roundabout is finally open.

The new rotary connects North Park, Cunard and Agricola, and people seem to be happy with the city’s latest piece of infrastructure.

“[The construction] was a little bit crazy,” said one local. “Everyone was using all the tiny back streets to get around it, but it’s worth it.”

Another local said he’s just happy to see it. “Living in the neighbourhood, it was quite a disruption, so now that it’s done, that’s great and hopefully it works.”

Halifax Regional Municipality spokesperson Jennifer Stairs said the new roundabout will decrease traffic jams and prevent T-bone collisions.

“It does make it safer for motorists,” she said. “It’s also safer for pedestrians. We have much shorter crossings and more regular intervals around the roundabout.”

She said this is the first of two rotaries to be installed on North Park Street.

“The second one will be built at the intersection a little bit further down North Park at the intersection with Cogswell, Ahern Rainnie and Trollope.”

Construction for that roundabout, she said, will begin in the spring.
