Michael Kydd resigns from MSVU teaching position

A part-time instructor at Mount Saint Vincent University says he’s resigned from his position after having what he calls a consensual sexual relationship with one of his students.
Michael Kydd, who’s also the president of contracting firm Merit Nova Scotia, says he was intimate with the woman on two occasions and later exchanged sexual photos with her.
In a statement to reporters at his lawyer’s office in Dartmouth Thursday afternoon, Kydd apologized to his wife and children and said he came forward because it was the right thing to do.
“I did not want to compound my mistake — and this is my mistake — by failing to come forward and take responsibility for what I have done,” he said.
Flanked by his lawyer, Rebecca L. Hiltz LeBlanc, Kydd said this incident is nothing like allegations leveled against Jian Ghomeshi, or what’s going on with Dalhousie. But he said he understands the desire to make such a connection.
“This was something that was completely consensual, where a mistake was made,” he said.
“But I understand the climate.”
In an online statement Thursday morning, Mount Saint Vincent President Ramona Lumpkin said it’s investigating an allegation of a potential code of conduct violation by a part-time instructor.
A spokesperson for the school confirmed via email the instructor is “not in the classroom, pending the investigation.”
The statement from the school’s president says the situation involves the instructor and one student.
