100 homes near Lake Major dam to be evacuated

About 100 homes below the Lake Major dam are expected to be evacuated by early Satruday as crews work to repair damage to the structure.
James Campbell of Halifax Water says the dam suffered some damage during heavy rainfall on Dec. 10.
He says a contractor is being brought in to examine the dam on Saturday and carry out the work.
Campbell said homeowners were being informed Friday evening but a mandatory evacuation will be in place by 8 a.m. on Saturday.
He said the evacuation of the homes in the Cherrybrook area is being carried out as a precaution while repairs are underway.
City spokesperson Jennifer Stairs tells News 95-7 there’s no immediate danger to anyone in the area.
“What we’re doing this evening is knocking on the doors of about 75-100 homes in the area to let people know that this work is going to be going on tomorrow, and we strongly advise that they leave their homes during that work,” said Stairs.
“We want to make sure that people are at a safe distance in case there is a breach of the dam.”
Stairs says the city is still working on finding accommodation for those affected.
She says there will be some road and bridge closures in the area on Saturday as repair work is completed.
