Winter weather causes cancellations and closures across the region

If yesterday’s Groundhog Day prediction has anything to do with today’s messy storm aftermath, it might be a good idea to start putting a little more faith in the furry forecaster.
The region has extending the overnight winter parking ban into Wednesday from 1-6 a.m. to give crews an opportunity to properly clear streets and sidewalks, and Canada Post has cancelled mail delivery in Nova Scotia today because of severe weather conditions.
News 95.7’s meteorologist Richard Zurawski said we ended up getting about 20-25 centimetres of snow here in the Halifax region, with less rain than was expected.
“We wound up getting much colder temperatures than we thought we might otherwise get,” he said. “There was very little rain associated with this. There was some freezing rain, but mostly ice pellets and snow.”
Zurawski said we shouldn’t be getting much more of the white stuff this morning, but it will be a very wintry day.
“Things are just going to get cold. There’s going to be snow, blowing snow and ice pellets this morning, then the temperature is going to fall to minus 15 degrees.”

SCHOOLS AND CHILDCARE
- Halifax Regional District School Board: schools and offices closed
- Annapolis Valley Regional School Board: schools, work sites and offices closed
- Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board: classes have been cancelled for both students and staff
- Tri-County Regional School Board: schools closed
- South Shore Regional School Board: schools closed
- Strait Regional School Board: classes cancelled at all schools, all buildings closed & support staff do not report to work. Today’s exams will be written tomorrow.
- Sandy Lake Academy: closed
