More winter weather causes disruptions across the region

It’s been a chaotic week for commuters all across the region, and today, the wintry weather is continuing to cause disruptions.

According to our meteorologist Richard Zurawski, we are waking up to an extra 25-30 centimetres of the white stuff here in Halifax.

“And with the drifting [snow] winds were gusting to 60 kilometres an hour, so we’ve got places where it’s almost impassable out there right now,” he said. “It looks like a major low pressure system went through. We’re going to get some winds, some flurries this morning and then things are going to change.”

Zurawski said we can expect lots of blowing snow while on the way to work today — so drive with caution.

“We’ve got blowing and drifting snow out there, in spite of the fact that a ridge of high pressure will dominate the weather patterns, with the wind, it’s going to create white-outs and make things difficult, and push the snow back into the roads.”

He said he expects the drifting snow to taper off by mid-morning, but we can prepare for a bit of a cold snap after that.

“The temperature is going to stay steady at about minus 13, minus 14 degrees, then overnight we get clear skies and the temperature continues its downward trend. It’s going to stay at minus 15 to minus 16 degrees.”

Zurawski said here in Halifax, we got a total of about 60 centimetres of the white stuff this week.

SCHOOLS AND CHILD CARE

All Halifax Regional School Board schools are closed today
Annapolis Valley Regional School Board: schools closed, work sites open at 11 a.m.
Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board: school cancelled for students and staff
South Shore Regional School Board: schools closed today, work sites and central office will open at 11:00 a.m.
Tri-County Regional School Board (Digby, Yarmouth and Shelburne Counties): will be closed today
Chignecto-Central Regional School Board: schools closed, offices, garages and work sites have delayed opening of three hours
Strait Regional School Board: all schools closed
Sandy Lake Academy: closed
Dalhousie University: Agriculture Campus in Truro will open at noon, Halifax campus open
StFX University: closed until 4:00 p.m., essential services maintained
NSCC: Waterfront, Akerley, IT, Marconi, Cumberland, Truro, Pictou and Strait Area campuses closed
Cape Breton University: closed
Edward Jost Children’s Centre closed
International Language Institute in Halifax: classes cancelled
DaVinci College: closed

TRANSPORTATION

Halifax Transit has many routes operating on snow plans, check their website for specific details

SERVICES

CEED Nova Scotia workshop has been cancelled
Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS): all workshops and classes cancelled, offices to open at 10 a.m.
Military Family Resource Centre (Halifax and Shearwater sites): closed, providing update at 11 a.m., includes daycares
Halifax Public Libraries: all branches to open at 11 a.m.
Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents various recreation programs may be cancelled or delayed this morning due to weather, many centres may be closed

GOVERNMENT

Provincial government offices in Halifax County, Halifax metro, Hants, Colchester, Cumberland and Pictou counties have a delayed opening of 10 a.m.
Provincial government offices in Antigonish and Guysborough counties, and all of Cape Breton will delay opening until noon today
CFB Halifax: closed until 11 a.m.
Annapolis Royal and Lawrencetown: Municipal Offices delaying opening until 10 a.m.
East Hants: Municipal office, pool and Waste Management Centre will delay opening until noon
