Student, other groups plan anti-austerity protests throughout the spring

By The Canadian Press

MONTREAL – A coalition of groups opposing the Quebec government’s austerity measures plans to conduct about what it calls 40 “disruptive actions” across the province this week.

A spokesperson for the coalition says there will be five or six events per day this week in Montreal and beyond.

These will include marches and protests as well as more creative actions such as flash mobs.

On Feb 25, activists in La Baie in the Saguenay-area plan to build an ice wall in front of the office of a local Liberal member of the legislature, Serge Simard.

The events have been organized by community groups, unions, and student groups, including the militant student organization ASSE, one of the leaders of the massive 2012 student protests in Montreal.

The groups are planning other actions throughout the spring, including a province-wide protest day on April 2 and a new round of student classroom boycotts.

Group leaders are asking the Couillard government to roll back austerity measures which they say have affected the quality of public services in the province.
