Macdonald Bridge overnight closures resume

The Macdonald Bridge will close tonight as work on the Big Lift project resumes.

Closures were suspended last week after the contractor, on two separate occasions, was unable to reopen in time for morning rush hour.

Halifax Harbour Bridges CEO Steve Snider said in a release that the contractor has provided a detailed root cause analysis of last week’s late openings, as well as a detailed look-ahead schedule for the next two weeks.

“As a result, we are permitting overnight closures to resume this evening, Tuesday, October 27th, at 7p.m.,” said the release. “The planned overnight closure schedule will then resume on a go-forward basis, from Sundays to Fridays each week.”

As for weekend closures, Snider said that will be decided on a case-by-case basis, and a decision on whether the bridge will close this weekend will be made in the next day or so.

“This decision will be made when HHB is satisfied that sufficient preparations have been undertaken by the contractor to proceed with the second deck segment replacement, while ensuring the Macdonald Bridge reopens on time for users on Monday, November 2nd” he said.
