Generator catches fire on HMCS Ville de Québec at Halifax dockyard

HALIFAX – A fire in a diesel generator on HMCS Ville de Québec at the Halifax Dockyard on Thursday sent three engineers on the Halifax-class frigate to hospital.

The ship was testing its combat readiness when the lead engineer noticed a fire inside one of the ship’s four diesel generators at around 3 p.m. Thursday

Spokesperson Capt. Cameron Hillier said one of the three engineers that arrived on the scene activated sprinklers located inside the generator’s steel enclosure, which quickly contained the flames.

“HMC Dockyard fire department showed up to confirm the fire was put out,” Hillier said, adding the three men were sent to hospital as a precaution to be treated for smoke inhalation. The three men were sent home on Thursday night, according to Hillier.

The cause of the fire and how much damaged it caused to the ship, which had just received an upgrade, is not known at this time.

“Once things have been rendered completely safe there, they will start that investigation to ensure everything remains safe in the future,” Hillier said.
