Mayor Savage speaks on Davie Shipyard issue

HALIFAX – Mayor Mike Savage says the bid put forward by a Quebec based shipyard for a number of coast guard ships is concerning.
The Davie Shipyard has made a $1-billion bid to build ships which were awarded to the Seaspan Shipyards in Vancouver as part of the national shipbuilding strategy.
Savage is urging the government to reject the bid, adding the shipbuilding procurement program that originally awarded the contracts worked well.
He says the bid came out of the blue and is contrary to what the shipbuilding procurement program was designed to do.
“It was an unsolicited bid and wasn’t asked for by the government, said Savage. I don’t expect that there will be any change, but I’d certainly be concerned if there was.”
Premier Stephen MacNeil was asked about the bid Thursday, calling the bid “out of the ordinary,” before adding he expects the federal government to keep it’s commitment to Irving Shipyards.
