Some municipal candidates want term limits for councillors

HALIFAX – There is some chatter among candidates in this fall’s municipal election about adding term limits to those elected.

Atleast five candidates in a variety of ridings suggest that councillors should be limited to serving no more than three terms on Regional Council to ensure new blood is brought to the table on a consistent basis.

Lisa Blackburn, candidate in District 14, tells Metro Halifax the limited terms in council will increase awareness and engagement in municipal politics.

Joining Blackburn in the call for limits, District 6 candidate Carlos Beals, District 8 candidate Brendan Sommerhalder, District 9 councillor Shawn Cleary and District 13’s Pamela Lovelace.

Currently, there are no limits to the number of years that a person can serve on municipal council.
