Auditor General says municipality’s development process is inconsistent

By Matthew Moore

HRM's Auditor General says that management of the municipality’s development approvals requires a great deal of improvement.

Poor processes and approaches among hrm staff have lead to lengthy delays and a lack of guidance on who should review applications.

Auditor General Evangeline Colman-Sadd says application review files were often times incomplete.

“I think management are aware that there are issues that need to be addressed, I think they know that there are improvements needed in the system,” Colman-Sadd said.

Colman-Sadd added that there are delays in implementing planning and development's strategic plan which is meant to improve its operations.

Mayor Mike Savage says he'd characterize the report as disappointing but not shocking.

Savage has long heard processes are too slow and that timelines aren't followed.

The AG made 10 recommendations, all of which were accepted by HRM management.
