EHS paramedic facing criminal negligence charges

A paramedic is facing several charges after a Halifax Regional Police investigation into tampered vials of hydromorphone.

Police were contacted by Emergency Health Services on May 9 after they noticed an issue with their hydromorphone inventory.

Investigators believe a paramedic removed vials that were stored in EHS drug vaults at three local hospitals.

Darrell Bardua, 52, of Seaforth has been charged with breach of trust, criminal negligence, theft under $5,000 and mischief under $5,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 15.

EHS says the paramedic has been placed on leave and all potentially affected vials have been removed from circulation.
