Lawsuit: Student suspended after reporting sexual assault

ATLANTA — A lawsuit says a student was suspended from a Georgia high school after telling school officials she was sexually assaulted by another student.

The lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court in Atlanta on behalf of the teen, who is identified as “Jane Doe.” It accuses Gwinnett County Public Schools officials of violating her rights under Title IX. That 1972 law bars discrimination based on sex in schools that receive federal money.

The lawsuit says the girl was 16 in February 2015 when a male student sexually assaulted her at Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee. Her lawyers say the school suspended both students, saying they had violated a rule against sexual contact on school grounds.

A Gwinnett schools spokeswoman said Monday they hadn’t received the complaint and couldn’t comment.
