Parks Canada looking for input on five Halifax historic sites

By Victoria Walton

A new survey open to the public is hoping to improve what's known as the Halifax Defence Complex.

The five sites that make up the complex are the Halifax Citadel, Georges Island, the Prince of Wales Tower, York Redoubt, and Fort McNab. They were designated as historic sites in 1965, but the management plan for the sites has not been updated since 2009.

“A really important part of developing that is getting ideas and feedback from Canadians,” says Danielle Hickey, a Partnering, Engagement and Communications officer with Parks Canada.

The new section of their website, called Let's Talk Parks Canada Halifax!, encourages citizens to sign up, take the survey, and leave their feedback.

“We want to hear from people about what is important to them. What do they want to know more about? ” Hickey tells NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show. “So we can be sure that our direction going forward recognizes and fulfills those expectations.”

Hickey says the survey has targeted questions about specific issues, but it also has open comment sections so people can leave suggestions about whatever they're most concerned about.

There is another section called #NameThisStreet, where people can suggest names for the streets that lead up to the Halifax Citadel.

“They don't technically have a name right now,” says Hickey. “We refer to them as 'Perimiter Road', but you can't actually stick that in the GPS to find your way.”

The survey acknowledges that the five national historic sites are on the unceeded territory of the Mi'kmaq people. Hickey says there are specific questions about sharing diverse perspectives and stories.

“It was really important for us to be up front on the website and make a clear statement that we are in Mi'kmaki, and we acknowledge that,” Hickey says.

The survey is available online until March 31.
