Inmates close Alaska prison section; officers regain control

By The Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Alaska Department of Corrections says 62 prisoners took control of a section of a maximum security prison.

Corrections officers regained full control Wednesday morning at Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward after about nine hours.

The prisoners at 9 p.m. Tuesday barricaded the entry to their section and began destroying property.

Response teams from Kenai and Anchorage arrived at about 3 a.m.

The teams forced their way into the barricaded unit.

No staff or prisoners were injured. The department says every inmate was cleared by medical personnel and decontaminated.

A department spokeswoman, Sarah Gallagher, did not immediately respond to questions about what prompted the disturbance.
