Fortune Doughnut takes the classic dip to new heights

By Nicole Bayes-Fleming

Whether you’re craving a traditional chocolate dip or something completely unconventional—like orange Creamsicle, matcha Kit-Kat, or tequila margarita—Fortune Doughnut can satisfy your sweet tooth.

“The best part about this business is that our decorating team and our bakers have full creativity with the menu,” said Andrew Ivey, general manager at Fortune. “They make the magic happen.”

Ivey is this week’s midweek mugging recipient. He said when it comes to doughnuts, you can’t go wrong.

“We figured—why not donuts?” he said. “Doughnuts are the biggest up and coming food, and the East Coast is only now getting into the trend.”

Located at 2306 Gottingen St., Fortune offers a colourful array of doughnuts that change daily. Depending on how busy a day is, the store offers as many as 15 to 23 different flavours, including vegan options. All doughnuts are made fresh and decorated in-house.

“Everything is hand-cut, everything is hand-fried, it’s all hand-decorated, so it’s really nice,” Ivey said.

The store’s most popular treat is the “She’s Salty,” a classic vanilla dip topped with crunchy potato chips.

“It’s that salty and sweet combination that people are going crazy for,” he said.

Fortune shares the same owners as Freak Lunchbox, and while the two are completely separate companies, Fortune benefits from being able to use Freak Lunchbox candies to create fun doughnut toppings.

“It makes us a little bit different, but it also makes us more fun as well,” Ivey said.

Ivey said that part of the fun of doughnuts is being able to share them with others, a trait that contributes to their recent boost in popularity.

“I find that wedding cakes and birthday cakes and things like that are just so outdated now, and why not have something you can pick up in your hand and individually have?” Ivey said.

Fortune now offers custom orders, including the option to create large doughnut “cakes.” The store also has plans to expand into catering. Ivey says anyone with inquiries can contact the store online or over the phone.

“We are brand new, so bear with us,” Ivey said. “But we will get there.”

While Fortune is certainly popular with children, Ivey said he sees a wide range of people coming in for their sugar fix.

“It’s a little bit of everyone, which is what we love,” he said. “There’s no age limit on doughnuts.”
