NSTU confirms elementary teacher in Debert killed in mass shooting

By Steve MacArthur

Details are beginning to emerge surrounding one of the victims in the mass shooting over the weekend.

Early Monday afternoon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at least 18 people were killed in a shooting rampage that began in Portapique, N.S., on Saturday night.

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union confirms one of those killed was a teacher at Debert Elementary.

According to the schools website Lisa McCully was a grade three and four teacher. She is described as a passionate teacher and a shining love in the lives of her family and friends.

“There are many others who died last night whose families are struggling to process what has happened. Their lives are no less precious. They are our neighbours and friends. Their children are our students.” President Paul Wozney writes in a post on Facebook. “We hurt with you all too.”

The union states it is also honouring the life of Constable Heidi Stevenson, an exemplary 23 year RCMP veteran who laid down her life responding to the call.  Constable Stevenson was the wife of Dean Stevenson, who teaches at Cole Harbour District High School and a loving mother to two children.

Investigators are continuing to piece together one of Canada's deadliest mass killings, which saw a man who at one point donned a police uniform slay 16 people as he travelled across northern Nova Scotia over the weekend

Investigators have said the alleged shooter, identified as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, was also killed after police intercepted him at a gas station in Enfield, N.S.

His death is now being investigated by the Serious Incident Response Team.
