Halifax is getting a new Ronald McDonald House

A brand new Ronald McDonald House will be doubling the number of families it will be able to serve across Atlantic Canada.

The announcement was made outside the IWK Health Centre on South Street, the future site of Halifax's newest facility on Wednesday.

Both the federal and provincial governments have teamed up to invest $7.5 million dollars to build the new facility for families in need.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil, local MP Andy Fillmore and other dignitaries were on hand to announce the new facility that aims to provide support and keep families together when children are receiving medical care.

The Government of Canada is investing $4 million in the project through the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream (CCRIS) of the Investing in Canada Plan.

McNeil said the province contributed an additional $3.5 million dollars into the new Ronald McDonald House, adding the new facility will aid families from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island as well as Nova Scotia.

“This is not just going to be a building, quite frankly,” said McNeil. “This is going to be a link between communities and families who require our support. It is also going to demonstrate who we are and demonstrate how we collectively support one another in times of need.”

McNeil said the upgraded facility will have 36 bedrooms, doubling the number of families Halifax's current Ronald McDonald House serves annually.
