Scholar Strike comes to Dalhousie University

The Scholar Strike is a two-day event being held across North America by university and college faculty and students to call for an end to all forms of systemic racism.
On Thursday, it took shape on the campus of Dalhousie University in an event titled Be Heard.
The open mic gathering aimed to give voice to the school's students and staff who identify as Black, Indigenous or a person of colour.
Organized on the Studley campus off South Street, people gathered to share stories and offer support for racialized persons.
Dalhousie University's President and Vice-Chancellor, Deep Saini, was on hand for the event. He said events like this are an important part of improving the culture and people need to continue to speak out against racism.
He added he felt his personal support was important.
“I personally have to take that responsibility for being very active,” said Saini, “so that people understand that racism is not acceptable at the highest level of this institution.”
Saini said Dalhousie is taking strides to improve policies against racism but changing the culture is just as important.
Several events were planned nationwide as part of Scholar Strike, scheduled in conjunction with the start of the academic year.
