Shirley’s Splash Pad opens on the Dartmouth Commons

By Meghan Groff

Kids in Dartmouth have a new place to cool off on a hot day.

Shirley’s Splash Pad is now open on the Dartmouth Commons.

According to a social media post by Halifax Parks and Recreation, this is considered a “soft opening” as crews will still need to close the facility at times to finish some elements and make some final adjustments.

The new aquatic facility is tucked in near the basketball courts and will operate between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Just push a button to activate the water.

Volunteers with Friends of the Dartmouth Splash Pad and Park spent over 5 years planning and advocating for the splash pad, and raising some of the money to fund its construction.

A large portion of donations came courtesy of Shirley Clarke's family. The splash pad is named after her.

The long-time Dartmouth resident raised six children on Thistle Street. They all attended Park School, which was previously located near the new play area.
