Nearly 20 rural Halifax Regional Municipality communities will be getting upgrades to their sidewalks and transportation routes.
Regional council released a list of 17 “candidate rural communities” to the HRM's Active Transportation Priorities Plan yesterday, meaning they will soon be receiving new sidewalks, multi-use path systems or paved shoulders on roads.
Among the 17 communities are East Preston, Hammonds Plains, Hubbards, Windsor Junction, Sambro, Lake Echo and others.
According to a staff report, the communities were chosen based on population density, community input and traffic data.
East Preston will be the first rural community under the program, pending council’s approval.
The report said the first five projects could cost between $4 million and $19 million dollars for the municipality.
