Environment Canada issues winter storm warning for Halifax

By Mark Hodgins

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Halifax Regional Municipality ahead of a storm expected to bring some of the highest snowfall totals of the season to the area.

Environment Canada's warning says Halifax will see 20 to 30 cm of snow starting later in the day on Thursday, with winds gusting up to 80 km/h.

“We're expecting to see the snow start later this afternoon, maybe around 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. we'll see some light stuff,” explained Environment Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard. “Then it's going to continue through the evening and intensify and go right through to the morning.”

Hubbard says the snow will likely be intense starting around 8 or 9 p.m., and the winds will pick up closer to midnight. He added snow will likely taper off to flurries around 6 a.m. Friday.

Other parts of the province, including the Valley, Lunenburg, and Queens counties, are under snowfall warnings, with 15 to 25 cm of snow expected.
