Strike action starts Wednesday for Halifax-area school support staff

School support staff and pre-primary educators in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education will be hitting the picket lines today.

Strike action is underway as of Wednesday morning after CUPE members rejected a tentative deal with HRCE.

Schools will remain open, buses will keep running and the excel program will continue, but pre-primary programs will be cancelled and families with children who need the extra help are hearing from schools on next steps.

The union says members are calling for higher wages, rejecting the employer’s last offer of a 6.5 per cent increase over three years.

Labour relations minister Alan MacMaster in a statement says the province is “deeply disappointed” in the negotiations and says the deal with workers was “fair to employees and taxpayers”.
