Weather statement warns more rain, thunderstorms on the way this week

More rain is in the forecast in what has become a summer of thunder in Nova Scotia.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Wednesday morning, calling for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Friday into Saturday.

The advisory is in place from Yarmouth to Halifax along the Atlantic coast.

“A trough of low pressure approaching the Maritimes from New England on Friday will bring periods of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms to parts of the southwestern Atlantic coast beginning Friday morning,” said the weather agency in its statement.

The national forecaster said there was significant uncertainty about the exact timing of the storm and what areas will see the most rain. It’s calling for up to 50 millimetres of rain but said thunderstorms will bring locally higher amounts.

The advisory added that similar storms in the past have led to water pooling on roads, localized flooding and hazardous driving conditions.
