High-risk offender faces new charges, including aggravated sexual assault

A man who was at the centre of a high-risk offender notification after being released from prison late last year is facing many charges, including aggravated sexual, after an alleged incident in Halifax on Monday.

Halifax Regional Police said at around 3 p.m., a man approached a woman in a car on South St. and offered her money for a drive. She took him to the area of Cunard and Hunter Streets, where police allege the suspect assaulted and robbed the woman.

Police allege the suspect then entered a home on Clifton St., forced two women inside into a bedroom and physically and sexually assaulted them. According to HRP the women managed to fight the man off and got away. They were taken to hospital for treatment.

In a release, police said Gamon Jay Leacock, 49, was arrested in backyard on Hunter St. He was taken to hospital where police allege he tried to escape, but failed. He was expected to appear in court on Tuesday facing a long list of charges including two counts aggravated sexual assault.

In October, Halifax Regional Police issued a high-risk offender notification for Leacock. It said he had moved to Halifax after completing a 14 year prison sentence for crimes including a violent sexual assault in Montreal in 2009.

Leacock was also charged earlier this January in connection to alleged harassment of a woman known to him at a home in Dartmouth. According to Saltwire, those charges were stayed last week.
