Police involved in power pole crash while chasing suspect on bicycle

Halifax Regional Police says a police cruiser was involved in a crash over the weekend as officers responded to a theft at a grocery store.

According to HRP, police were called to the Quinpool Road Superstore on Sunday afternoon to reports of a theft from the store.

Police say the suspect, who fled on a bicycle, was located on Nora Bernard Street a short time later, and the officers in the marked patrol vehicle activated their lights and siren.

“The bicycle turned onto Maynard Street, and as police followed, they collided with the suspect and then subsequently collided with a power pole,” read a media release from HRP.

The suspect and one of the officers were taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries, and a second officer was treated by EHS.

A 37-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at later date to face charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5000.00

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to police.
