HRM staff to study a new aquatics facility for the city

By Mark Hodgins

Regional Council has ordered staff to compile a report looking into developing a new aquatic facility after councillors unanimously voted in favour on Tuesday.

During the debate, District 7 Halifax South Downtown Councillor Waye Mason said a new facility that meets competitive swimming standards, which the Centennial Pool does not, is needed.

“I started to hear from other swim clubs in New Brunswick and PEI and elsewhere in Nova Scotia that we don’t have any facility in the region,” said Mason

As for the future of Centennial Pool, Mason says there’s no intention to close Centennial Pool anytime soon.  “we’ll cross that bridge when we set fire to it.” Said` Mason

Mason says if Halifax wants to host the Canada Games and other national events in the 2030s, it will need such a facility.

In a recent report, staff found that the average cost of aquatics facilities built elsewhere in Canada over the last several years was about 73 million dollars.
