Blaze at under-construction building controlled: Firefighters

People living on the peninsula were being told to close their windows on Tuesday morning as crews battled a fire at an under-construction building in the north end.

Firefighters responded to a fire at about 8:20 a.m. on St. Albans Sreet, near Robie Street and Almon Street. Crews found flames and “heavy smoke” coming from the tenth floor and roof of a high-rise building under construction.

“Roofing materials were burning which created a heavy black smoke plume, a press release from Halifax Fire reads. “Several propane cylinders were involved in fire.”

Witnesses at the scene told CityNews they heard “pops”, believed to be coming from exploding propane tanks on the roof.

Heavy, black smoke could be seen billowing from the roof of the building. Officials said as of 8:45 a.m. the fire was brought under control. About 33 firefighters were called to fight the blaze.

Officials say no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire prompted Halifax to send out an alert to people on the peninsula.

“Smoke from the fire is possibly toxic,” the recorded alert said. “Please close all windows and shut off air exchangers if you live on the peninsula.”

Police had closures in place on Robie and Almon streets. Fire crews said they expected to be on the scene for an extended period of time.
