New residences on NSCC campuses aim to help ease housing crisis

The first two of seven Nova Scotia Community College on-campus housing projects are finished and ready to welcome 150 students in the fall.

On Monday, the province announced the residence at Akerley campus in Dartmouth is set to house 100 students while 50 others would move into the Pictou campus residence in Stellarton.

“Housing is such an important factor for students when deciding what and where to study and, since I first became Minister, I have heard from students that they want to see more modern housing options,” Brian Wong, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Advanced Education, said in a release.

Another 200 students will eventually be housed on Ivany campus in Dartmouth when that project is completed in 2025.

The projects are part of the province’s housing and homelessness strategy to free up housing for other Nova Scotians, as students move into on-campus bedrooms.

“I’m so pleased to see that their needs have been taken into account with these accessible facilities that are already fully booked, so they will have more options to study and work in their home communities,” Wong said.
